Traditional Dentures

Traditional dentures, also known as complete dentures, are removable dental appliances used to replace a full arch of missing teeth (either upper or lower jaw). They are custom-made to fit over the gums and are designed to closely resemble natural teeth and gums. Traditional dentures can restore the appearance of a smile, improve chewing function, and support facial muscles for a more youthful appearance.

Components

  • Denture Base: The base of the denture, often made of acrylic resin, fits over the gums and provides support for the replacement teeth.
  • Replacement Teeth: The replacement teeth, typically made of acrylic or porcelain, are attached to the denture base. These teeth are custom-designed to match the size, shape, and color of natural teeth for a natural-looking smile.
  • Framework: In some cases, a metal framework may be used to provide additional support and stability for the denture.

Types

  • Complete Dentures: Complete dentures replace a full arch of missing teeth, either the upper or lower jaw.
  • Immediate Dentures: Immediate dentures are placed immediately after tooth extraction, allowing patients to have replacement teeth while their gums heal. These dentures may require adjustments as the gums shrink and reshape during the healing process.
  • Conventional Dentures: Conventional dentures are placed after the gums have fully healed from tooth extraction, which typically takes several months.
  • Overdentures: Overdentures are complete dentures that are supported by dental implants. Implants provide added stability and retention for the denture, reducing the risk of slippage or discomfort.

Benefits

  • Restoration of Appearance: Traditional dentures can restore the appearance of a smile and improve facial aesthetics for individuals with missing teeth.
  • Improved Chewing and Speech: Dentures restore chewing function, allowing patients to eat a variety of foods with ease. They also help improve speech by providing support for the lips, tongue, and cheeks.
  • Affordability: Compared to other tooth replacement options such as dental implants, traditional dentures are often more affordable and accessible for many patients.
