Dental Crowns

Dental crowns, also known as caps, are dental restorations that cover a damaged, weakened, or aesthetically compromised tooth. They are designed to restore the tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance, while also providing protection and support. Here’s an overview of dental crowns:

Purpose

  • Strengthening: Crowns are used to strengthen and protect teeth that have been weakened by extensive decay, large fillings, or root canal treatment.
  • Restoration: They restore the shape, size, and function of damaged or broken teeth, allowing for normal biting and chewing.
  • Protection: Crowns provide a protective barrier against further damage, such as cracks, fractures, or wear.
  • Aesthetics: Crowns can improve the appearance of teeth by covering stains, discoloration, or irregularities in shape or size.

Types of Crowns

  • Porcelain Crowns: These crowns are made of tooth-colored porcelain material that closely resembles natural teeth. Porcelain crowns are highly aesthetic and blend seamlessly with the surrounding teeth.
  • Metal Crowns: Metal crowns, such as those made of gold alloy or base metal alloys, are known for their durability and strength. They are often used for back teeth where chewing forces are greater.
  • Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) Crowns: PFM crowns combine the strength of metal with the natural appearance of porcelain. They have a metal substructure covered with a layer of tooth-colored porcelain.
  • All-Ceramic Crowns: These crowns are made entirely of ceramic material, offering excellent aesthetics and biocompatibility. They are suitable for front and back teeth and are often preferred for patients with metal allergies.

Composite Veneers

Composite veneers are made of tooth-colored composite resin material and are usually applied directly to the teeth in a single visit to the dentist’s office. While composite veneers are more affordable than porcelain veneers, they may not last as long and are more prone to staining and chipping.
